AVG Anti-Virus Free EditionAs most people know who use the Internet, computer security is a huge concern. Most of us buy and install one of the well known virus protection software packages (Norton AntiVirus and McAfee are but two examples) to hopefully protect our operating systems and files from unwanted infection. Most of the software packages involve the purchase of the initial installation plus some sort of paid subscription that you must renew annually to access the frequent update downloads that are distributed, sometimes daily. These updates are vital to keep your virus protection up to date in order to combat the latest exploits from affecting your system. Along with costing way too much for what these products deliver, the more popular packages tend to greatly affect the overall performance of your computer. This results in painfully slow web surfing and other computer tasks due to the computing resources these packages require to operate in the background.

I’ve been using a free virus protection option for over a year now and have had great results. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition from AVG Technologies not only is free to download and use, it offers daily free updates to keep the virus protection up to date. It has an added benefit of being light weight and and runs quietly in the background without noticeably affect your computer’s performance.

While they do have the free offering, they do have a premium edition which adds some bells and whistles if you prefer to go that route. I find the free version works just find for me. If you’re interested in checking it out, below is a link to their download page.

I agree totally. AVG puts out some quality free products. I too have been using their free antivirus for a year or so, but have also purchased their full internet security suite — though the firewall isn’t my favorite, the rest of the suite seems very solid!

Thank you for your comment Brian. I’ve been thinking about trying out the premium suite for some time now since the free anti-virus has worked so well for me as well. Gotta love free though.

I love AVG. For quite a long time I am using AVG Free Antivirus and it works perfectly. I am recommending AVG to all my friends and clients whenever they are in need of better anti-virus protection.

Thanks Ana. I’m glad you like AVG. I love not having to deal with bloated commercial anti-virus software that just slows down your computer and being that it’s free ain’t bad either. Thank you for visiting and leaving your comment.

While AVG was a good product, I found the fact that their malware suite insists on scanning every day - regardless - and hogged up a lot of my system resources in the process. I’m also sorry to report that it let several questionable pieces of email through - all discovered later by yet the next product I bought to protect my computer. I’ve used Norton, McA, ZoneAlarm, AVG, and now running Kaspersky.

My only real problem… not buying stock in any of these companies LOL!

Thanks Diane. it seems like the anti-virus business is more of a moving target than ever. Thanks for the tip on Kaspersky. I’ll definitely check it out. I’m also with you regarding buying stick in these companies. The trick is finding the right one.
