Visual voicemail is one of the more intriguing features of Apple’s iPhone. The only problem is you have to be an AT&T Wireless customer and have to cough up the money for the iPhone itself to enjoy the benefits and convenience of visual based voicemail. For all the rest of us who have smart phones other than the iPhone, there’s a new free alternative available that offers visual voicemail to anyone for free. The service is called YouMail and it offers a ton of interesting and useful features.

Instead of listening to voice prompts and having to wade through messages you may not want to listen to, visual voicemail presents your messages in list form either on your phone or in a web browser on your computer. You can now see who called, where they called from and even their picture. This way, you can easily pick and choose which message to listen to in a random access fashion.

This function allows you to assign unique greetings for each of your contacts. You can choose from a wide selection of free greetings or upload your own. They also offer a selection of premium greetings for a small fee.

YouMail offers you to option to forward any voice message as an email attachment to anyone you choose. This provides an easy and convenient method of sharing messages with family and friends. You can also post the audio message directly to your MySpace or Facebook page.

This features allows your to automatically hang up on unwanted callers before they can leave you a voice message. This is particularly useful for those annoying telemarketing calls that seem to come right when you’re ready to sit down to have dinner.

While you are always able to access your YouMail visual voicemail directly from your phone or web browser, you can elect to have your messages sent to your email address. This allows you to organize your email and voicemail messages in a single inbox. Since your messages are sent to you via email, you can forward and save messages quickly and easily. This method also allows you to access your voice messages even when you don’t have reception on your phone.
YouMail.com is free to sign-up and use. I invite your comments regarding your experience with this service.
